Fernando Perdomo + Matt Tecu: Art

Give two virtuosos a free reign and one of two things will happen: excessive noodling of the "look-mom-no hands" variety or locking into a groove, listen carefully to each other, and create something that is bigger than the sum of its parts. Fernando Perdomo (guitar, bass, keys, Mellotron) and Matt Tecu (drums, percussion, voice, acoustic guitar) had the audacity to call their collaborative album Art, but they pulled it off with a collection of progressive fusion tracks, mixing rock and jazz, tailor made for independent movies set in a sun beat environment.

Perdomo and Tecu both can hand over an impressive resume, which landed them jobs with high profile artists. This album shows their compositional skills, without the pressure of an outside A&R guy or producer breathing down their neck. The tracks on Art soar and fly. Fingers crossed it lands on a desk of an exec who will ask nothing, safe to go back to the studio and record a follow-up asap, with his company picking up the tab. There is no such thing as too much of good thing.

Fan Girl: little pig

Melbourne indie rockers Fan Girl crammed quite a lot of psychedelic, post-grunge guitar into their new single little pig, with a few loud-quiet-loud passages to give the listener a chance to catch their breath. It's not exactly a wall of sound, but it will keep the uninitiated at bay. The track will be included on their real or staged EP, out on September via AWAL Recordings.

Matt Saxton: The Edge Of Things

English singer Matt Saxton wrote his new single, the piano ballad The Edge Of Things, from the perspective of an outsider looking in, an extra hoping for a place in the spotlights. The brass and saxopone give it a bit of blue eyed soul, wrapped in an early 80s vibe. He lives near Roger Daltrey's fish farm in Heathfield, East Sussex, so he gave him a respectful nod in the middle eight.

Black Moon Book: Black Moon Book 3

Chicago based multi-instrumentalist Mark Lofgren (The Luck of Eden Hall, The Thin Cherries) is looking back on his life on the third album by his Black Moon Book: moving to another town, love, loss, booze, and trying to keep it together. All things considered he managed to stay afloat. The autobiographical tales are mostly served with a soft-spoken psychedelic mood, with carefully played guitars and synths playing catch.

The passing of time has caught him by suprise, but by capturing a few memorable moments he is able to relive them by pushing "play". And while it is highly personal, the themes are universal and will appeal to anyone who looks into a mirror searching for their younger version.

"Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision" documentary premiere on August in NYC

Good news, sort of, for Jimi Hendrix fans. The box set has been in limbo since early 2022, but the Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision documentary will finally be shown. Deadline had the exclusive:

Abramorama has taken global rights to Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, a documentary on the creation of Hendrix’s famed recording studio from Experience Hendrix L.L.C.

The distributor comes to the project after backing two past Hendrix docs from Electric Lady Studios‘ director, John McDermott: Electric Church, as well as Music, Money, Madness: Jimi Hendrix Live In Maui, which was nominated for the Grammy for Best Music Film in 2022. McDermott’s latest will open the Quad in New York city on August 9, with a global rollout to follow.

Icarus Phoenix: High Tide

Songwriter Drew Danburry went through a divorce, which left him devastated as he was being looked as a commodity whose value would be sole subject of his worth. He coped it with in the best way he could: turn into a song for his band Icarus Phoenix.

High Tide is both a plea and accusation, trying to make sense of the clusterfuck he found himself in: "You can't value what's misunderstood, such obstinate ignorance // You can't value what's misunderstood, such thoughtless callous judgment". The track is accompanied by a harrowing solo acoustic version. When that fails to move you, see a shrink asap.

I Believe In My Mess: Superstar

Amsterdam-based duo I Believe In My Mess are like kids in a candy store, stuffing their faces with every treat they can think of. Their new single Superstar is a quirky pop song on top of motorik rhythm track, spiced up with beeps and purs, snippets of spoken word, as if Captain Beefheart had an unhinged Krautrock phase before going off to explore indie dance and dub.

Geert de Groot (bass, guitars, synths) and Frank van Praag (rhythms, guitars, synths, vocals) have written their own "there are no rules" manual. There is a method in their madness, but dissecting it would be a serious buzz kill.

Lawrence County: Nottamun Town

Lawrence County

Nottinghamshire's folkies Lawrence County are avid students of the long and sometimes outright confusing and disputed history of the songs they picked for their Nottamun Town album. The definitive Roud Folk Song Index is the main source for the sleeve notes - Dirty Old Town is not an Irish song and Nottamun might actually refer to Nottingham.

All academia aside, the album itself is a sonic treat, with all musicians pitching in to breathe life into the tracks as if they were brand new. Poor Wayfaring Stranger has a quiet intensity that will shut up the clientèle propping up the bar when they play it live. Murder Ballad Lucy Wan gets a faster treatment than usual, which is quite fitting as the killer makes a run for it.

Shehehe: Get on My Lawn

Punkish power pop trio Shehehe hail from Athens, GA, a fertile environment for interesting indie band. Their single Get on My Lawn is invititation to jump around with reckless abandon, a shot of adrenaline without any nasty side effects.

Nicole Bechill (bass, vocals), Jason Fusco (drums, vocals), and Noelle Shuck (guitar, vocals) have created a heady mix of the Ramones and the Replacements, with Joan Jett and Cheap Trick waiting in the wings to join in. It is a first taste for their Namedroppers album, due for release on August 23rd on Say 10 Records.

Cagri Raydemir: Jumping to Conclusions

To call Germany-based multi-instrumentalist Cagri Raydemir prolific would be a huge understatement. His new EP Jumping to Conclusions is his 20th release since 2010, with most of his music in the progressive niche: firmly radio-unfriendly but very interesting time signatures, multi-layered guitars, and slightly pontificating lyrics about the human condition.

Raydemir is pretty good at using tension and release, alternating between acoustic and electric guitar. His musical guest, trumpet player Julian Hesse added a bit extra jazz-tinged colour to Impulsive Judgement and Pigeonholed, definitely a collaboration that should be explored in depth on his future releases.

John Cale: Baker's Dozen for The Quietus

John Cale picked his favourite 13 tracks for The Quietus for their Baker's Dozen series. He started off with long time favourites The Beach Boys, with the superb I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times from their Pet Sounds album:

It’s no secret, my admiration for all things Brian Wilson. Of course I wrote Mr Wilson as an ode to him, not so much his famous band. Pet Sounds is arguably their most disparate suite of songs – masterful in the orchestrations, lyrically introspective. [It was] the point of knowing I was right all along when I thought Brian was the dark horse genius decipherable to anyone listening beyond the pretty stuff. This demonstrated that pop doesn’t always come from a happy place. Case in point here!

Steven Wilson: "The Overview" European tour

Steven Wilson has announced a lengthy European in May and June 2025 to coincide with the release of his new album The Overview. It is his first since 2017. His tour for The Future Bites was cancelled for obvious reasons and he decided not to go on the road to promote The Harmony Codex. Plenty of catching up to:

I’m thrilled to be able to announce a Steven Wilson tour for 2025, my first for 7 years. The Overview Tour will be an audio-visual experience based around a forthcoming new release of the same name: a space themed album that features just two long pieces. I’ll also be playing music from The Harmony Codex for the first time as well as songs from all of my previous records. I’m incredibly happy to be performing again with my inspirational solo band, and we have a lot of lost time to make up. I look forward to seeing you at what will be an epic evening!

You can gain exclusive pre-sale access for the UK and EU tour dates by pre-ordering a limited edition signed CD of the forthcoming album ‘The Overview’ from the official store.

Greaser Phase: Greaser Phase

Greaser Phase

NYC garage rock duo Greaser Phase play good times old school rock 'n' roll, with a bit of power pop thrown in for good measure. Jonny Couch (vocals) and Benny Imbriani (guitar, bass) enlisted drummer Kevin Shea to keep the beat for the tracks on their self-titled debut album, honouring the adage that each song could be a single. Their back to basics approach paid off in spades, be it the Stonesy main riff in False Paradise, or Couch channeling his inner Joey Ramone for Love is Guaranteed.

If anything they set out to to have a lot of fun, banging out a fresh sounding collection of catchy timeless originals. They keep it simple and basic, which is actually quite difficult to pull off. Expect a lot of appreciative nodding and bobbing when they play live. O, and lots of air guitarists trying to play along and failing miserably.

John Cale in Interview

John Cale

John Cale had a chat with Michael Sheen for Interview. About the anger on his new album POPtical Illusion:

I had a lot of energy. I was really angry. I didn’t want the anger to really predominate. It was really about trying to find out what else there was around you that you considered as part of your persona. If you’re writing lyrics, you start with a lyric and then you go to the music. Or you start with the music, then go to the lyrics. You really don’t want to obey too many of the laws of poetry and rhyme too much. You don’t mind tripping over your own shoelaces. Making mistakes is really important sometimes, and I’m still growing.

Bruce Moody: PopCycle

Bruce Moody

Power pop multi-instrumentalist Bruce Moody went through stacks of reel-to-reel recordings from the 80s after finishing his home studio to find out if there was anything he could use for a new album. It turned he had captured plenty of good ideas back then, some of them mere sketches and some of them almost finished. He reached out to his like-minded fellow musicians and ended up with a dozen of shiny, sunny-side up sounding songs plus a fun novelty track called Houdini.

PopCycle is all about the melody, with ace harmonies riding the wave of joyous pop, mixing the Beach Boys approach with New Wave and a bit of Cheap Trick. Age is just a number, and this album could easily be mistaken for a bunch of twenty-somethings rocking out and having a ball. Emotional baggage shows does show up in the lyrics (Keep It Together, A Very Dull Girl), but it is all taken in stride. Pop it in the player of your car, roll down the windows, and keep an eye on the speedometer - otherwise you will be doing 80 in a residential zone and be frowned upon by the law.

Icarus Phoenix: Painting

Drew Danburry leads his band Icarus Himself through slow moving shoegaze on the new single Painting. Grief reigns surpreme in this amalgam of R.E.M. and the Decemberists, as Drewbury sings about his mother who never picked up a brush to create again art after the therapy classes that she attended after her third son succumbed to cancer were over. The pace picks up a bit near the end, before diving into a drone-driven coda on top of a chugging back beat that sounds like a freight train passing by in the distance.

It is a track from their new album I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said, due for release in August.

Eades: Constantly

photo: Sam Joyce

Leeds garage rockers Eades go for dirty, fuzzy sound on their single Constantly. It is a tough song about drugs and booze wreaking havoc in their immediate surroundings. As per usual there is plenty of opportunity for the audience to sing along on this one. They used a few tricks from the Oasis manual, but imitation is the best form of flattery.

Words about music (739): Dave Vanian

David Vanian
In the beginning, the punk scene was so full of promise. All the bands were different, and all the sounds were different. The common denominator was that it was all very young kids doing it, and doing it on their terms. But then it became, 'You should listen to this and you should wear this uniform, and you shouldn't do this or that.' It was supposed to be about not having rules, but every generation of music gets watered down.

Rowan Newby: Hurry Up and Wait

Rowan Newby makes a case for taking it easy on his new single Hurry Up and Wait, a mid-tempo psychedelic folk song with a hook that has earworm written all over it. Mint Biscuit: Hot Moon

Welsh guitarist Richard Thomas is looking forward with Hot Moon, the latest album his Mint Biscuit project. Grief is still part of the equation - the death of his father pops up in quite a few tracks, albeit indirectly. If anything he is showing a renewed appreciation for the little things, like the footwear of his wife (Laces Of Your Shoe) or paying visits to his family (Stompington Meadows, a place that will ring a bell with Pink Floyd fans).

It looks that Thomas has found his bearings again and it shows in the energy that is a vital ingredient of his bluesy rockers (You Just Want To Give Me Your Germs) and psychedelic pop excursions like Mealworms and Summer Song, a track that references both later day Floyd and Dylan's All Along The Watchtower in a deviant show of joy. O, and there's Tulips, which mentions this blog resident genius. That is a first for sure.

Pocket Knife Army: Endgame

Dutch electronic pop duo Pocket Knife Army have gone back to The Draw, one of their live in the studio recordings, and turned into the more upbeat track now called the Endgame. It is a warning of sorts - "you had it coming", but also an invitation to dance the night away.

Lost Signal & The Happy Somethings: Time

Electronica artist Matt Couchman of one-man band Lost Signal and quirky pop trio The Happy Somethings joined forces for a bit of melancholy with their Time single. A nice play of light and shade, contemplating the past, present and future, and wondering why it seems that things are happening faster each day: "Time comes over the hills // No time to kill // Can't stop - never will".

The Vanrays: Hey! Alright Now

photo: Carleen Kyle

Vancouver based garage soul ensemble The Vanrays have rounded up six more tracks that were recorded during the sessions for their Put It Out album last year. The Hey! Alright Now is not an exercise of scraping the barrel for a stop gap release, but a properly sequenzed set of songs that fell off the wagon for unexplained reasons back then.

Emotions run rampant once again, mostly about heartbreak. Think the Spencer Davies Group getting in a tiff with Blood, Sweat & Tears, before deciding that they are in the same boat. Step into the Tardis and be transported to the late Sixties and early Seventies, a time wherein guitar, keyboards and brass were equal partners, screaming into the void.

Mint Biscuit: Place Your Hands

Welsh guitarist Richard Thomas revisited Place Your Hands by English rock Band Reef with his one-man band Mint Biscuit. It is a track that was setlist regular when he played with Mint when he was a student at Durham University. Despair and hope are juggling from dominance in the lyrics of this one, and he did a fine job with the vocals - nevermind he to stitch them together from a couple of takes.

Those familiar with the original will notice that there a bit of extra mustard when he plays the bridge one more time. He decided to keep it that way. Shoring up a song with a bonus bridge by mistake actually made it more sturdy and interesting.

Femegades: Sex Robots

English quartet Femegades take shit from nobody on their new Sex Robots EP. Taking cues from riot grrrl and punk rock, they barrel through five high energy songs, with unwanted male gazes as the main theme.

Wrapping their message in damn catchy music might take away a bit from their righteous anger, but getting airplay from clueless DJ's who don't bother listening to lyrics is in the cards as well. Recommended if you like X-Ray Spex, The Slits, and Hole.

The World of Dust: 13 Holy Nights

Between December 24, 2023 and January 6, 2024 Dutch avant-folk musician Stefan Breuer shared 13 brand new tracks on social media by his lo-fi The World of Dust project, documenting a kind of spiritual quest. It was only a matter of time for this endeavour would get a proper release. All the tracks 13 Holy Nights were based on his dreams, so basically anything goes in his lyrics. He runs into a conductor and a cat when wanders around in Art School, with a choir singing Eels songs, and he goes back to his first tries at recording with a Tascam 388, which is the same machine he used again for this album.

Breuer also creates collages and that modus operandi spilt over his music: lo-fi, multi-layered and full of surprises. The twists and turns of his experiments with an Ensoniq sampler enabled him to find both old and new sounds as he tried to find the words and music for his search for serenity. He succeeded to capture the fleeting memories of what his brain was up to when he was asleep. It is a highly personal journey, during which Breuer bares his soul for all the world to see.

Blab School: Blab School

Blab School

Durham, NC based post-punk quartet Blab School looked up a winning recipe in the playbook for recording an angry album. Their self-titled record brushes shoulders with both garage and goth rock, seasoned with a dressing of nihilism and not giving a fuck in general.

Nevertheless, it is very danceable and it will go down well with the dressed-in-black outsiders with a craving for old school twin guitars and an in-your-face rhythm section. It will clear the room of frat boys and sorority girls who might have wandered in by mistake.

The Speed Of Sound

Manchester based psychedelic power pop veterans The Speed Of Sound are on a roll with their new album A Cornucopia: Minerva, an apt title for a collection songs that are rooted in the diversity of gnarly melodic music that has seen the ligth the day from the Sixties until the present day.

Main songwriter John Armstrong lifted elements from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (Mind Palace), the Dystopian imagery a la Fischer-Z's Red Skies Over Paradise, The Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane (SS-100-X), English folk (The Harvest) he and his band stitched a mult-coloured tapestry of sounds that fights tooth-and-nail against pigeonholing.
