The Chairman Dances: Hadn't Tried

Philadelphia based indie band The Chairman Dances have unveiled Hadn't Tried, as the second taste for their concept album Evening Song, a collection of songs celebrating the happy couple Maggie and Chris. It is quite melancholic pop song with a few smart rhythm changes, with the lyrics being a classic case of just giving it a shot in order to make a relationship work. And lo and behold: it ends well.

Dusty Stray: shows in Amsterdam & The Hague

photo: Auke Vleer

Jonathan Brown will be playing shows in Amsterdam and The Hague with his Dusty Stray project to promote his Fire Place album: "Brown's superb way with words are emboldened by a subtle, mostly acoustic band. Five years have gone by since the release of his previous album Estranged - which also was about the matters of the heart. With Fire Place he tapped into the same source, but now that he is getting older he looks to future with a bit more confidence as he has realized that being with someone might not be the be-all and end-all for him, at least for now".

John Cale: "Paris 1919" and "The Academy in Peril" remastered and expanded reissues in November

Paris 1919 and The Academy in Peril, the two albums that were recorded by John Cale for Reprise, will be reissued on November 15 via Domino on both vinyl and CD.

Meadowlake: where the mountain meets the sea

Dutch band Meadowlake had to reinvent themselves after two band members quit. Now down to a trio the tracks on their new album where the mountain meets the sea are more concise,, but also a bit faceless. Recorded by Buck Meek (Big Thief) and Germaine Dunes in their brand new studio in Topanga, CA, they settled for a subdued sound that rarely gets away from the safety of introspective wanderings.

It sounds good - they got fabled NYC based engineer Philip Weinrobe to mix the album - but it does not properly register and listeners will have a hard time to keep paying attention. It falls straight into the "Put on something I can ignore", as John Cusack said High Fidelity.

Can: "Live In Keele 1977" drops November 22

On November 22 the sixth installment of the official series of CAN live bootleg recordings Live In Keele 1977 will be released on via Spoon Records (2LP, CD, digital) and distributed via Mute. It captures the band in transistion, with Rosko Gee as the new guy on bass. The German inventors were keen improvisers and during concerts by the Krautrock ensemble anything could happen.

This album is a dynamic document of late-period CAN. Recorded in March 1977, the core line up of Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Michael Karoli, and Holger Czukay is augmented by the addition of Rosko Gee (Traffic) on bass. Gee’s recent addition to the line-up meant that Holger Czukay was freed up from bass duties to perform “waveform radio and spec. sounds”, manifesting here as otherworldly sounds, samples and what one reviewer of a later show described as “moontalk to a white continental telephone.”

Mandrake Handshake: King Cnut

photo: Jeanie Jean

London based psych collective Mandrake Handshake offer a history lesson of sorts on their single King Cnut. About a thousand years ago a Danish king, who ruled both Denmark and what would later become the UK, thought that he control the tides by sheer willpower. He failed miserably and legend has it that he had an epiphany that a king's powers are not unlimited. The band used it as a launchpad for channeling frustation about being locked indoors with only a slim chance that things will get better soon.

A Place To Bury Strangers: "Bad Idea" video

NYC noise rockers A Place To Bury Strangers latched on unto a simple looping drum beat, courtesy of John Fedowitz. He actually thought it wasn't any good, but frontman Oliver Ackermann begged to differ and it became the springboard for a truly collaborative effort. They named the song Bad Idea. The video was made by Nick Kulp.

The Meringues: Pavlova's Dog

Canadian post-punk quartet The Meringues have some issues about relationships and as per usual go through to whole array of emotions. The songs on their new album Pavlova's Dog are raw, abrasive and fucking catchy. There is not much wiggle room for different view points, when the hurt of a breakup comes crashing down like a tidal wave. Honesty is overrated at this stage as well as turning a blind eye at one's own faults.

When Pavlova's Dog does not yank your chain on an emotional level, there is always the in-your-face poppy punk mood of the music to get a rise out of you. Three chords and the truth, right?

The Armoires: Octoberland

BEST OF 2024
7
HCTF

Californian power pop band The Armoires play games of light and shade on their new album Octoberland. Beneath the sunny side up baroque arrangements lies a wicked sense of humour: We Absolutely Mean It is their tongue-in-cheek ticket to long overdue fame - "this is where we go big". Well maybe in parts of Scandinavia (This One's For The Swedes). And there is always the comfort of Music & Animals.

All fun aside, they can dig deeper (and darker) with thought provoking concepts, most notably in Here Comes The Song, portraying a songwriter losing control about the contents and meaning of the lyrics he just wrote. Or did he? It gets a life of its own, with the musicians not exactly sure that they are happy about that, but not being able to grab the steering wheel and force it to another destination. The band's vocalists Christina Bulbenko and Rex Broome love to their ability to go for on-point call-and-response an harmonizing, which takes off a bit of the edge of the obvious putdown in You Oughta Be Cut In Half.

Colin Robinson: interview in The International Times

English avant-garde musician Colin Robinson (Jumble Hole Clough) had a nice chat with Dominic Rivron for an interview in the International Times. About his modus operandi and the importance of using the right words (and cover art):

I’m interested in word-play such as anagrams. Quite a lot of the Jumble Hole Clough titles may contain anagrams… My dad used to win lots of crossword competitions; perhaps I picked it up from him.

I also like to use chance in my compositions. I used to use a variety of aleatoric techniques to construct songs; dice and so on. I use the Brian Eno ‘Oblique Strategies’ card pack of aphorisms when I’m recording; and we also use them live with Abrasive Pheasants to structure our improvisations. I am now trying out generative procedures with my synthesisers, making pieces that gradually evolve in a random yet structured way. I’m not interested in just chaos – I want to create something that evolves. And something that is listenable to as a piece of music rather than as a technical exercise.

Words about music (752): Ray Manzarek

I'm just a '60s kind of guy. It's all love and peace. People say all my playing still sounds like The Doors, but did I sound like The Doors or did The Doors sound like me?

Pickaxe: Drugs Like Me

Punk meets noise and hardcore on D.C. based quartet Pickaxe's new single Drugs Like Me. Vocalist Emily Rainey spits out the words about a relationship that is not exactly safe, hiding the hurt and self-loathing in a couple of double entendres that will likely be over the heads of the crowd in the moshpit in front of the stage when they perform it live. It is a track from their forthcoming Provocateur EP, due for release on October 30.

Giant Day: Glass Narcissus

Giant Day
BEST OF 2024
12
HCTF

Psychedelic pop duo Giant Day consists of two veterans from the indie underground scene. Multi-instrumentalists Derek Almstead (The Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, The Glands, of Montreal) and singer Emily Growden (Faster Circuits, Marshmallow Coast) cut their teeth in Athens, GA and took their Krautrock meets adventurous dream pop and post-punk with them when they set up shop in a shop in a farm in Pennsylvania. Their debut full-length Glass Narcissus is a summation of a couple decades worth lessons they have learned along the way.

It is a record for listeners who are willing to go in at the deep end to explore inner turmoil, pet peeves and serious concerns, wrapped in subdued yet danceable music. Darkness beckons, but there is also a glimmer of light offering a chance to see if some of the fears are real or imagined. Jangling, slightly distorted guitars and tinkling synths are the foundation for soft-spoken vocals deserving undivided attention.

J.M. Hart: As We Know It

Singer-songwriter J.M. Hart is an introspective mood on his new album As We Know It. His podcasting habit got him in touch with a wealth of like-minded musicians, who were happy to contribute to this fine example of homegrown Americana.

He is counting his blessings - of which there are plenty - and his main concern seems to be that there are not enough hours in the day to immerse himself in his music collection, being a family man, conduct interviews, log in hours for a day job in IT, and write and record his own material.

Eades: "Constantly" live @ Abbey Road

Leeds garage rockers Eades had the pleasure to record two songs @ Abbey Road's Studio 3 in London. The rollicking Constantly is the second one. Devon Chambers was on hand to film it as well. It is a track from their Fight or Flight EP.

Peter Hall: Afterlove

Love songs are served in a couple flavours. The ones celebrating, the ones longing for the other one to reciprocate, and the ones when it all ends. English musician Peter Hall makes it abudantly clear in which category his new single Afterlove belongs. It is just him and his acoustic guitar, with some studio trickery to enable him to act as his own backing vocalist.

He is still stumbling in the dark, wondering what the hell happened. Reasoning with his own emotions is not much help either, because there is no cure for heartbreak.

Curtis Eller's American Circus: Another Nice Mess

BEST OF 2024
19
HCTF

Neo-vaudeville folk outfit Curtis Eller's American Circus are entertainers pur sang, seemingly relying on tried and true styles, but with plenty of twists and turns, both musically and lyrically to capture the listener's attention. On their new album Another Nice Mess - yes, the title track is a hat tip to Laurel & Hardy - band leader Curtis Eller leads his band on a grand tour of bygone American folklore. Learn about the tragedies German gymnast Lillian Leitzel and heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, whose careers ended badly. Actress Fay Wray of King Kong fame, on the other end, made a glorious comeback after she had to start working again, to overcome financial troubles. People could run into her in the street and do a double take once they realized who they just saw.

They always have been a band that have a soft spot for outcasts, losers and people going their own way like the unnamed protagonist in Conscientious Objector. They make a case of straying from the mainstream and not give in to the values of Standard White Jesus, a cover of the Pat Macdonald song, with the killer line "Everybody want to be on a stamp, but nobody wants to die". True Love in the Exclusion Zone offers some pointers on how to write a good love song. O, and don't waste your youth on being part of a firing squad. There are plenty of these "what the fuck" moments, making Another Nice Mess a thrill ride that you don't want to end.

The Happy Somethings: Rent To Kill

The Happy Somethings

English twee trio The Happy Somethings take a swipe at the costs of housing (and some other things) on their new single Rent To Kill. Left or right, you are fucked. They take it slow on the furnished version, with a sparse backing to get all the emphasis on the words. A fine of of bottled anger in a folk setting, which is quite fitting for a genre that is known for taking a stand for the less privileged. The unfurnished version is a tad faster, with a more prominent role for the guitar.

Oh Hazar: tour dates

Dutch art rock band Oh Hazar have announced a bunch of shows to promote their Clair Obscur EP: "They have the hooks, the words, the breaks and the ability to string it altogether to create something very special indeed. They play with light and darkness, making it personal or political and - as a whole - pretty intense. They shun the easy routes, sprinkling dissonants, feedback and unexpected rhythmic shifts in each track."

Duo Decad: Forever After

Duo Decad

Duo Decad, a transatlantic collaboration between former Able Archer singer Emmet McCaughey (Dublin) and Mark Casey (Chicago), makes a case for those who are suffering from mental illness on the new single Forever After. It is a plea that sounds both sad and invigorating. Their particular brand of electronic pop is a throwback to the 80s, when technology was on the brink of superseding the guitar as the main instrument in music.

Icarus Phoenix: Hatillo 2

Experimental folk band Icarus Phoenix have picked Hatillo 2 as the next single from I Should Have Known the Things You Never Said. Songwriter Drew Danburry wrote it to come to terms with a harrowing experience in the neighbourhood in San José, Costa Rica, after which the song is named. Suffice to say that it involves being confronted with death and relationship troubles.

Fen: Dear Mouse

Canadian prog metal band Fen have resurfaced with a new album, Dear Mouse.Founded in 1998 the band's longest serving members, singer Doug Harrison and multi-instrumentalist Sam Levin drank deep from the well of classic heavy metal when melody was king, although there was also plenty of room for fiery fretwork.

Even when they play really fast - budding musicians will have a hard time trying to keep up with Dying on a Hill (of Cubicle, Window, Steel, and Concrete) - the band is super tight. Riding the groundswell that started with NWOBHM and morphed into trash metal, Fen is a band that will appeal to musos and disgruntled teens of all ages. Recommended if you like Rush and Iron Maiden.

Trey Anastasio: interview in Guitar World

Trey Anastasio was interviewed by Alan Paul for Guitar World. They discuss practising, amps, and putting on special shows with Phish like different sets and visuals for the 4-night run at the Sphere in Las Vegas and performing Gamehendge at Madison Square Garden:

It’s always been like that, which leads to the Sphere, where I wrote all this music for the atrium, so there was original music when you walked in the door and different walk-on music every night, Easter eggs that led you to the opening song. And we had special between-set music every night, and every single song had a visual that alludes to the narrative but was never literal.

English musicians and music geeks extraordinaire Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness have posted a new episode of their podcast The Album Years. Tuff Sunshine: No Juice

Leave it to Brooklyn based post-punk musician Johnny Leitera to capture the anxiety of the big city with his one-man band project Tuff Sunshine. On his new single No Juice he offers advice, sort of, to cope when the walls are closing in or how to deal with street violence (spoiler: it is a losing game). With gruff and stacatto vocals on top of a nervous, unrelenting electronic backing, it will probably be way to intense for the public at large, but for those who like their music dark and adventurous it is an exhilirating listening experience.

Ideini: Holding Us

French-Italian duo Ideini are back in the game with Holding Us, with all their signature dreamy trip-hop musings in fine fettle. Theo Duplus and Francesca Martino took a rough-around-the-edges backbeat, fired up the synths, and topped it off with whispering vocals, telling a tale without a Hollywood ending.

Steven Wilson: band members for "The Overview" tour

Steven Wilson has announced the musicians who will join him on stage during his European tour, dubbed The Overview, in May and June 2025: Nick Beggs (bass), Adam Holzman (keyboards), Craig Blundell (drums) and Randy McStine (guitar, vocals).

The tour, his first since 2017, coincides with the release of his new album The Overview. The shows for The Future Bites were cancelled for obvious reasons and he decided not to go on the road to promote The Harmony Codex, which was released last year.

The Okmoniks: Afterparty Fever!!!!

photo: Jack Matthew

Fuzzy garage rockers The Okmoniks have a simple message for the world: rock out and dance. The nine tracks on Afterparty Fever!!!! could have been recorded in the early 60s, with singer Helene 33 working a double shift on her Ace Tone Top 5 organ and vocals. It is all very, very lo-fi, with plenty of nods to the proto-punk era, when bands like the 13th Floor Elevators and the Sonics made their mark. The sole cover, Cry a Little Longer, from The Grodes, is performed with an intensity that fans of the original will applaud.

Lyrically they don't rise above the boy-meets-girl or vice versa and all the subsequent shit that comes with it. Is that a problem? Fuck no, if anything this a band that can entice some kids to pick an instrument and start playing a handful of chords to make a racket, and maybe even a record, themselves.

Joyce: Hum Hotline

English singer and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Watkins shows some righteous anger on Hum Hotline, a track by his Joyce project, consisting of a group of alumni from the UK music scene who don't care about genres or pigeonholing who have teamed up to make an album called Voyce. Post-punk meets ambient and shoegaze for an unrelenting trip with Watkins as a grumpy guide pointing out things that get on his nerves.
