Ryan Anderson recorded the songs for Rock Alone, the new album by his Minorcan project, in his hometown Asheville, NC. He managed to keep it together - his mom died during the sessions which was the inspiration for the vitriolic Burial Insurance. His name was never going to be shown in big letters on a marquee, but he "can't afford to die", so he had to write "this song to pay for my funeral". Just when he was ready to do some press to let the world know that he has finished another a collection of lo-fi DIY arena rock, a hurricane took out half of the city. Ergo: no water, no power, no internet, but as a focal point of the Asheville underground he has made many friends among travelling musicians, and they made sure that the word got out.
Rock Alone is bold and abrasive, a record that does not take shit from anybody. The sound is murky, but that is by design. Anderson doesn't do pretty. He is a rocker, who makes his guitar scream and howl as he strangles the neck of his instrument. Add a knack for catchy hooks and riffs, plus a gruff voice that calls love a Shapeshiftin Demon, laughs at the idea of chasing glory with Memories Rerun, can spin a scary tale about a Nightmare Rider, and you have the recipe for a brutally honest album that is 101 for DIY music against all odds.
