North Carolina based rocker Chris Church touches base with country and power pop on his new album Obsolete Path. He almost never goes for a straightforward radio-friendly song, sneaking in unexpected breaks and diversions to ensure that the listener keeps paying attention.
Love songs are not his cup of tea, with the sole exception of Tell Me What You Really Are, a song that he wrote 20 years ago after a chance meeting with a woman who would become his wife. The relationship is a happy one, so any mishaps and troubles that crop up in his lyrics are by no means autobiographical. What is real however, is the realisation that he is no longer a spring chicken, so a bit of reminiscing and complaining is now part of everyday life.
Obsolete Path is released via Big Stir Records (CD, digital). Release date: March 28.
