Chicago avant jazz trio Hanging Hearts always take their time between releasing albums. Their debut Chris Weller's Hanging Hearts came out in 2014 and Into a Myth in 2017. This is not a bad thing, as they are always looking for new ways to challenge themselves and their audience (some of them are still mulling over the intricacies of their last one). A new album was recorded by Brett Bullion in January 4-7, 2023, at Palisade Studios in the Windy City, but a little more patience is in order. Where's Your Head will be released on June 13 via Ropeadope (vinyl, CD, digital).
Lead single Rise finds the trio on top of their game, with sax player Chris Weller and keyboard player Cole De Genova taking turns at laying down chorus after chorus, switching between bebop and free jazz without missing a beat. Drummer Quin Kirchner keeps it all together, but he also finds the space to steer the other two into yet another direction. It is this kind of cross-pollination that makes Hanging Hearts so much fun to listen to.
Hanging Hearts:
Chris Weller: tenor & bass saxophones
Cole De Genova: keys, synth, synth bass
Quin Kirchner: drums, percussion
Where's Your Head is available for preorder here.
Live dates:- 06/21 Vancouver, BC @ Vancouver International Jazz Festival
